When Adam Lanza, 20, fatally shot twenty children and six adult staff members on December 14, 2012, it was not the first or the last of pointless gun violence in America. But it was a turning point in how Americans viewed gun rights in the country. The shooter shot 154 rounds with a rifle into classrooms where teachers tried to shield students with their own bodies. There is something terribly horrifying about 6-year olds riddled with bullets form a gun meant only for use on the battlefield. The mass murder of children at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown shook everyone out of the apathy that has plagued lawmakers from making any headway in gun control. In a country where 2 people are shot dead accidentally every day, and one person is killed by a firearm every 17 minutes, it would seem getting some form of control on firearms is a no-brainer. But as of now. anyone can go to any gun show and pick up any gun without even giving his name, let alone a background check! One can, legally, buy an AK-47 off the internet.
Democrats have tried before to change this illogical license to buy a weapon more easily than a pack of cigarettes! President Clinton had instituted an assault weapons ban, which was allowed to expire under President George W Bush. If that single ban had been in place, Sandy Hook may not have happened, or at the very least would have had more survivors.
Politicians have always used the hallowed Second Amendment of the constitution to keep gun lobby happy and gun sales roaring. The Second Amendment states: A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.
The point was to ensure independence and freedom should the federal government infringe on states’ rights. It does not give a person a right to about murdering people! Also, the amendment was crafted in a time when one gun shot out one bullet, and guns were not deadly killing machines of today’s assault rifles. Supporters of the gun lobby tout the ‘right of anyone to bear any arms’ and the ‘defend ourselves and our home’ line. It takes only common sense that one does not need the ability to tear apart a large tree to defend oneself. A handgun is more than sufficient. The proposed law put forward by Vice-President Biden allows people to carry a firearm, so it does not infringe on any rights enshrined in the constitution. The law, when passed, will make background checks mandatory and more thorough, and more importantly, ban any weapons that carry more than 10 rounds. The Bill is supported by more than 90% of Americans, including members of the much-maligned National Rifle Association.
. Republicans have been blocking any change to the status quo even more fiercely after President Obama made it a priority after the Newtown shooting. With forceful media involvement by the White House public relations, and a very visible presence of parents of the Newtown victims, President Obama has forced the issue of Gun Control to the Congress. After threats of filibuster, the Republicans caved in to public pressure and a vote is in session as this writer writes. We hope sanity prevails, and this small step to a safer society is taken soon.
