The National Merit Scholarship Scheme, the objective of which was to provide financial assistance to Meritorious students studying from Post-matric to Post-graduate level in Government Schools/Colleges and Universities has been discontinued with effect from April, 2007. However, a New Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship for College and University Students has been introduced during XI Five Year Plan. The objective of the new scheme is to provide financial assistance to meritorious students from low income families to meet a part of their day-to-day expenses while pursuing higher studies.
The scholarships will be awarded on the basis of the results of senior secondary examination. 82000 fresh scholarships per annum [41000 for boys and 41000 for girls] will be awarded for graduate/postgraduate studies in colleges and universities and for professional courses, such as Medical, Engineering etc.

The Scheme was started in 1955-56 with the objectives to encourage the study of Hindi in Non-Hindi Speaking States and to make available to the Government of these States, suitable personnel to man teaching and other posts where knowledge of Hindi is essential. The Scheme was revised from 2004-2005. Under the revised Scheme, 2500 Scholarships are provided to meritorious students studying at post-matric to Ph.D. level, for recognized fulltime courses of education for study of Hindi as one of the subjects on the basis of the results of “examinations next below” conducted by a Board of Education or a University or a Voluntary Hindi Organisation. The rate of Scholarship ranges from Rs.300/- to 1000/- per month depending upon the course stage of study. This scheme is implemented through the State Governments/UT Administrations.

A scholarship Scheme entitled “Special Scholarship Scheme for Jammu & Kashmir” (SSSJ&K) has been launched by the Department of Higher Education, from the academic year 2011-12. Students belonging to the State of Jammu & Kashmir, pursuing general degree courses, medical courses, engineering courses, etc. outside the State of J&K , may apply for scholarship under this scheme, through the institute in which they are studying. The last date for receipt of applications for the Special Scholarship Scheme for Jammu & Kashmir is 15th November, 2012. This is applicable in respect of those students who have taken admission as per the pre-revised guidelines i.e. those students who secured admission in degree/engineering/medical courses in Govt. colleges/institutes outside the State of J&K, including, institutes/colleges which are NAAC-approved under category A&B, technical colleges/institutes which are NBA accredited.
